COMMEMORATIVE EMBROIDERY IMAGE FOR THE "ILTIS. MONUMENT" IN SHANGHAI
Embroidered souvenir of the "ILTIS. Memorial" in Shanghai: The German gunboat Iltis sank in a typhoon. Of 85 crew members, only 14 survived the drama. The German sculptor August Friedrich Johann Kraus modeled a splintered, 6-metre-high bronze mast with a German flag and laurel wreath at its base, based on a sketch by Captain Müller. The memorial was unveiled in Shanghai on November 21 1898 in the presence of Prince Heinrich, who a year later became head of the East Asia Squadron of the Imperial Navy, and was destroyed in the 1960 during the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
